Staff Physical Therapist (2002 to present)
 
Perform evaluations and treatments of patients in acute care setting including cardiac rehabilitation, oncology, neurology, orthopedics, general medicine, intensive care, and wound care. Interview candidates for physical therapy and physical therapy assistant positions within the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. Participate in peer review of physical therapy staff.

Mayo Clinic (Rochester, MN)
Staff Physical Therapist (1996 to 2001)

Evaluated and treated a diverse patient population in both outpatient and inpatient settings. Trained and specialized in vestibular rehabilitation, pediatrics, neurology, and orthopedics. Worked closely with prominent doctors in a direct access environment and developed strong evaluation skills. Practiced the well-known Mayo vision statement that “the needs of the patients always come first.” Provided in-service training to students and staff. Conducted lectures for patients in a class setting prior to total hip and total knee surgery utilizing critical pathway structure. Served on various task forces including peer review, assessment of pediatric services, and easement of vestibular rehabilitation appointments. Served as a clinical instructor for physical therapy students.

Worked part-time between classes and during the summer as a work study student while attending college full-time at Boston University. Duties included preparation of letters, memoranda, and documents using various computer programs within the information technology department. Executive Secretary (1987 to 1991)

Security Clearance: Secret. Worked full-time as the sole secretary/administrative assistant for 42 electrical engineers in the Advanced Missiles Department under the Missile Systems Division. Duties included preparation of memoranda, expense reports, and presentation of non-classified and classified materials related to government defense systems. Attended evening classes as an electrical engineering student at Fitchburg State College. Left Raytheon Company after five years of employment to attend college full-time at Boston University.

Evaluated and treated patients with head injuries, spinal cord injuries, and/or cerebral vascular accidents in outpatient neuro-rehabilitation. Provided in-service training to staff physical therapists in the evaluation and treatment of muscle tone.

Ireland Army Community Hospital (Fort Knox, KY) – 1995
Evaluated and treated soldiers with acute orthopedic injuries obtained during basic training. Attended weekly rounds and journal review sessions with staff orthopedic surgeons. Provided in-service training to staff physical therapists in the “McKenzie” method of the evaluation and treatment of the lumbar spine.

Evaluated and treated clients with orthopedic and sports related injuries in an outpatient center. Provided in-service training to staff physical therapists in the evaluation and treatment of postural dysfunctions.

Health Volunteers Overseas (member since 1999)

Da Nang, Vietnam (2006)
Evaluated and treated economically disadvantaged pediatric and adult patients with orthopedic and neurological impairments in rural Da Nang, Viet Nam. Conducted lectures and provided hands-on training to the Vietnamese physicians, physical therapists, and physical therapy students in the evaluation and treatment of patients in the acute care setting. Delivered donated physical therapy supplies/equipment valued at approximately $15,000.00 to the physical therapy department at the Da Nang Rehabilitation Hospital.

Umtata, South Africa (1999)
Evaluated and treated economically disadvantaged pediatric and adult patients with orthopedic and neurological impairments in rural Umtata, South Africa. Trained local physical therapists in the evaluation and treatment of children with developmental delay. Delivered donated medical and physical therapy supplies/equipment valued at approximately $5,000.00 to the Nelson Mandela Rehabilitation Hospital in Umtata, South Africa.

Meet with Virginia state legislators, including Senator Toddy Puller and Representative Kris Amundson, and advise them of important environmental legislation affecting the Commonwealth of Virginia.

American Physical Therapy Association (member in good standing since 1993)

Membership Chair, Northern Virginia (2004 to present)
Contact new members of the Virginia Chapter of the American Physical Therapy Association to welcome them to the organization. Promote benefits of membership to all physical therapists in Virginia. Attend yearly retreat and meetings to suggest means to increase membership in the Association.

Organized meetings for physical therapists and physical therapy assistants. Scheduled meeting sites, speakers, and vendors in the Northern Virginia region with topics based on interest of members. Provided refreshments for meetings.

Sierra Club (member since 1996)

Wasioja Group Chair, Sierra Club North Star Chapter (1996 to 2001)
Organized monthly meetings, scheduled speakers, provided refreshments, and led many hiking and biking outings for the group. Assisted in the publication and distribution of monthly newsletters and the organization of monthly meetings. Topics focused on environmental issues affecting Minnesota including reducing sprawl, protecting wolves, improving air and water quality, reducing logging in national forests, and preventing the use of motorized vehicles in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness.

Mayo Recreational Cycling Club, Founder & President (1996 to 2001)
Started a free cycling club for friends and employees of the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, of all ages and abilities. Organized outings including two weekly rides after work and weekend trips during the spring, summer, and fall months. Organized and ran monthly club meetings. Promoted the club through a variety of means to increase membership. Group started with two members and grew to over 100 members as a result of my marketing efforts.
